The Fire Service uses many different types of apparatus to
respond to emergencies. From the basic Engine Company, to
specialized Rescue Companies, The City of St. Lego Fire &
Rescue Service employs a wide variety of these trucks to
serve the population.
Here you will find the different typed of apparatus used by
the department, and a brief explanation of each.
Engine Companies:
Engine Companies are the backbone of any fire department. These are what most
people think of when they think of fire apparatus.
The basic job of the Engine is to put water on the fire.
Most Engine Companies carry at least 500 gals. Of water, a large pump to pump the
water, a large assortment of hose, and usually some type of master stream, such as a
deck gun, to put a large volume of water on a fire.
Engine Companies also carry rescue equipment, and medical equipment to help at
medical emergencies.
The St. Lego Fire Department utilizes Three Different Types of Engine Companies.
Below are the descriptions of each type, and what they are used for
Squad Engine:
Squad Engines are another
type of Engine Company
used by the department.
Squad Engines perform all
the functions of a
Standard Engine, in
addition to carrying extra
rescue equipment.
All Squad Engines in use by
the department carry a set
of Jaws of Life as well as
hurts cutting tools
Ladder Companies:
Ladder Companies, or "Trucks", are the other
type of T
ruck most people are familiar with.
There are several different types of Ladder Trucks in service, and we will explore
those types as we go on.
The main purpose of a Ladder Company, is to ventilate buildings, and perform search
and rescue operations.
A standard Truck Company consists of a large truck, with a large ladder, usually
over 100', or other type of aerial device mounted on it.
The most popular type are rear mounts, which has the ladder mounted on the rear,
usually extending over the cab.

Standard Engine:
The Standard Engine
Company is the most
common type of engine used
by the department.
The Standard Engine
carries a 1250 G.P.M Pump
and a Minimum of 500 Gals.
Of water.

Support Engine:
Support Engines are Engine
Companies used to supply
water to a truck or tower
company for  master stream
operations.
These Engines are fully
functional on their own,
but do not carry as much
equipment as a Standard
Engine Company
Rear Mount
Aerial:
Rear Mount Aerials are the
most common type of truck
Company
These large trucks have
the Ladder mounted on the
rear, extending over the cab

Tractor Drawn
Aerial:
Tractor Drawn Aerials or
"Tillers" are a large truck
where the ladder is
mounted on a trailer
pulled by a cab. The
trailer has it's own
driver, or "tillerman" who
steers the rear of the
truck
Tillers are very
maneuverable, and work
well in areas where the
streets are tight
Tower Company:
Tower Companies are a  
Truck that has a bucket on
the end of the ladder.
These buckets provide a
more stable working
environment on the
Fireground.
Tower Companies can
either be Rear mount or
mid mount where the ladder
is mounted behind the cab,
extending out over the rear
Quints:
Quints are a relatively new
concept in firefighting. A
quint combines all the
aspects of an engine and a
ladder.
Quints carry a water tank,
pump, hose, large selection
of ground ladders, and a
large aerial device.
Rescue Companies:
Rescue Companies are a special type of truck used by many departments.
These trucks are basically a large toolbox on wheels and are used for search and
rescue operations, extrications at accident scenes, Hazardous Material clean up,
building collapses and many other uses.
The department utilizes two different types of rescues.
Standard Rescues respond to most incidents and are equipped with enough equipment
to handle almost any type of emergency.
Tactical rescues are more specialized, and carry equipment specific to a certain type
of emergency. These are usually called for when the incident is to large for the
Standard rescue to handle
Rescue Companies:
Rescue Companies are
equipped with many
different tools for rescue
operations. The trucks
themselves have many
opening cabinets for
storing equipment.
Tactical Rescue:
Tactical Rescues are
specialized Rescue
Companies used for specific
incidents. The Department
has three Tactical rescues,
a Hazardous Materials
Unit, Dive Rescue and
Collapse Rescue
Specialized Units:
The Department utilizes many different types of apparatus for specific operation
Below is a listing of these units with a description of what they are used for.
Forestry Truck:
Forestry Trucks are
special rigs used to fight
fires in the state parks and
wooded area of the city.
These rigs are 4-wheel
drive and carry an
assortment of picks,
shovels and rakes for
fighting these fires.
Tankers:
Tankers are a specialized
type of Engine Company.
Tankers carry a large
amount of water, usually
at least 1500 gals., and
sometimes an assortment of
foam.
Lighting Plant:
Lighting Plants are a
special unit used to supply
lights on the Fireground.
These units carry a large
amount of lights and
extension cords, as well as
several generators to run
them.
Air Supply:
Air Supply Units are used
to supply air on the
Fireground.
Most carry extra
breathing tanks, and a
cascade system to fill
other tanks
