Rank Structure
Ever wonder who is in charge  on the Fireground?
The St. Lego fire Department uses the following command structure for all
Fireground operations.
Chief Officers:
Department Chief, Deputy Chief, Division Chief
and District Chief all wear white helmets with
flames on the front.
The number of squares on the uniform indicate
the level that the individual is at.
1 square is a District Chief
2 Squares is a Division Chief
3 Squares is a Deputy Chief
and 4 Squares is the Chief of Department
Line Officers:
Captains and Lieutenants wear white helmets
without the flame.
Each Engine, Ladder and Rescue Company is in
overall command of a Captain.
A Lieutenant is in charge of the company when
the Captain is not on duty.
Engineers/Chauffers:
Engineers/Chauffers wear silver helmets.
The Engineer/Chauffer is a firefighter who has
completed engineering school. They drive the rig
to the scene and are experts at working the pump
and all the equipment on the rigs,
Firefighters:
The backbone of the department is the Firefighter.
Firefighters wear black helmets.
Each Firefighter attends a 12 week academy
where they learn the basics of the job.
Once they graduate it is on to more advanced
training at the firehouse and
department training programs.
Firefighter on Probation:
Firefighters on Probation or "Probies"
wear red helmets.
These are firefighters in training who have yet to
attend the academy, or attended the academy and
have not yet completed all in house training and
been assigned to a firehouse.
Once all training is completed they get their black
helmet and become full fledged Firefighters
Wildland Firefighters:
Wildland Firefighters wear a white construction
style helmet, and wear a different type of gear
than other firefighters.
These are firefighters who specialize in fighting
forest fires.
After the basic 12 week academy, these
firefighters attend an additional 6 week academy
to learn how to fight and contain forest fires
Dress Uniforms
Dress Uniforms, or "Class A's"
are worn for formal events, such as awards
ceremonies, public appearances, and funerals.
Officers wear a white cap and all others wear a
black cap.
